Set up a till and tell HQ about your card machine

Updated

Open this in Talisk HQ

A till is one place that closes once a day. Several registers at one shop are one till. A second shop is a second till.

Open In store, then Tills.

Set one up

Enter a Name and the Province the shop is in, because a shop charges tax by where the shop is. Float left in the drawer is what stays in the drawer after you bank. It posts nothing.

From what date should HQ add your till sales? is the question that matters most. Deposits you coded as sales before that date stay as they are. From that date on, a close books the sale and a deposit only moves the money to the bank. Closes before that date are refused, so a day can't be booked twice. If any rule of yours codes deposits as sales, the screen names it, because it stops doing so from that date.

Tick This till takes tips to show the tips field on each close. Tips are held as owed to staff, never as a sale. Pay them from the drawer with a paid-out, or code the bank line to the tips account when you pay by e-transfer.

Money already in Undeposited Funds

If your opening balances hold money in Undeposited Funds with nothing behind it, the first till asks whether it is till money. Answer yes and say how much is cash, card batches or other, to the cent, so a later deposit can clear it. It posts nothing, because the money is already in your books.

Which machine is this?

When Square, Stripe, PayPal, Shopify or WooCommerce is connected, each till answers once for each of them.

  • This till is the Square one. Choose the date. From that date Square's payouts book this till's cards and gift cards, so a close takes only cash and other money. A storefront books everything, so no close is needed from that date.
  • A different machine. Every sale at this till is the close's. A card batch from another terminal stays yours to enter.

Until a till answers, HQ refuses card and gift card payments on it, and every payment for a store. A rail you connect later asks the same question here.

When a payout is waiting on your answer

If you connect Square after typing card sales, the first payouts could be those same sales. HQ holds them, and Waiting on your answer on this page lists them:

  • A different machine posts the payout.
  • Those were on that account reverses your typed closes from a date you choose, or from the first day holding those sales. HQ first shows every close it would reverse, the totals and what comes back as a draft, and nothing changes until you choose Reverse these closes. A locked close or a deposit that has cleared one refuses all of it, so choose a later date or skip. Reconnect a store first if it is disconnected.
  • Only sales after my link date posts a payout that holds nothing you typed. HQ refuses a payout that looks like a day you typed, and names the day.
  • Keep as booked, skip this leaves the payout out of your books on purpose.

What you skipped stays listed under Answers you have given. Take this back puts it back on the question while nothing has settled against it, and it is the only way to reverse a close you kept as booked.

A payout posts when you answer. A store's direct orders don't: they book on the store's next sync, or when you reconnect it.

HQ can't catch every case. It compares a payout's date with the week before it, so a payout paid weekly or monthly can carry days you typed without HQ seeing them. If an account pays you on a slower schedule, check its first payouts against your closes yourself.

Change or delete a till

Edit changes the name, province, float and tips. The start date stays once a till holds a close, and a till holding closes or money can't be deleted.

Good to know: A till's answers decide what revenue posts. "A different machine" says every sale at this till is the close's alone, so a wrong one counts sales twice. HQ records tips as owed and as paid, and stops there: it does not split them, classify them or work out what anyone is owed. Whether tips are employment income is a question for your accountant or payroll provider. If you don't see In store in the sidebar, it isn't on for your business yet.
