Margin and markup calculator
Work out the profit, margin and markup on a sale, or the price to charge to reach the margin you want. Shipping you pay and payment fees come off every sale.
Everything here is in Canadian dollars. Profit is the sale, including any shipping you charge, less the item, the shipping you pay and the payment fee. Fees are rounded to the cent. The fee is charged once per order, so enter the cost and price of the whole order.
What to know
- Margin is profit as a share of what you sell for. Markup is profit as a share of what it costs you, so a 50% markup is a 33% margin, and a 50% margin is a 100% markup.
- Markup here is profit divided by all your costs on the sale: the item, the shipping you pay and the payment fee. Margin is profit divided by the sale, including shipping you charge.
- When you ask for a margin, the price is rounded up to the next cent, so you never land below the margin you asked for.
- What counts as the cost of an item is its own question. See product costs and cost of goods sold.
- To see the sales tax on a price, use the sales tax calculator. For what a Shopify sale puts in your bank, use the Shopify payout calculator.
- How to price a product is a decision for you. This page only does the arithmetic.
