Images in email and your privacy

Open this in Talisk HQ

Many emails pull their pictures from the sender's own server when you open them. That download tells the sender you opened the message, when, and roughly where you were. TALISK_HQ stops it for people you do not know.

Who gets their images loaded straight away

Images load automatically when the message is from:

  • someone you have sent mail to from TALISK_HQ or your mailbox,
  • someone saved in your contacts,
  • one of your own mailboxes, or
  • a sender you chose to always load images from.

Receiving mail from someone does not count. A newsletter you never reply to stays held back however often it arrives.

When images are held back

A bar above the message says Images hidden to protect your privacy. It works the same way on your phone. Pick one:

  1. Load images shows the pictures in this message only. The next message from the same sender is held back again.
  2. Always load from this sender shows them now and remembers the sender, so their future mail loads normally.

Pictures that came with the message itself (a photo pasted into the email, a logo sent as part of it) always show. Only pictures fetched from somewhere else are held back.

Change your mind

Under a message from a sender you chose to always load, click (or tap on your phone) Stop loading images automatically. Their pictures are held back again from the next message on. (Senders who are trusted because you wrote to them or saved them as a contact have no such button: that relationship is what trusts them.)

Printing

Printing from a browser keeps the same choice: held-back images stay off the paper until you load them. Print is on a computer only.

Good to know: Covers remote images inside the body of an email you are reading in Talisk, on a computer or on your phone. Attachments and images the sender attached to the message are never held back. Talisk does not block images in mail you compose or send.
