Filter a sender out of your inbox
To move a sender's mail out of your working inbox:
- Open an email from that sender on the Current tab in Mail.
- Click Filter in the toolbar.
- Choose how their new mail should arrive: Arrives Read or Unread, and Badge Off or On (see below). A preview shows what each pair looks like. Click Filter, or Cancel to leave the sender alone.
TALISK_HQ files that email (and every other email from the same sender) under the Filtered tab, and keeps filtering their future mail automatically. A short Undo appears right after.
On your phone, open the email, tap More, then Filter mail from the sender. The phone asks the same two questions, Arrives and Badge, with the same preview, and nothing is filtered until you tap Filter.
To bring one back, open it under Filtered and click Move to Inbox. Note this restores that single email but leaves the sender rule in place; to stop filtering the sender entirely, remove them from your filtered senders list.
To see one again later instead, click Snooze on it under Filtered. It leaves Filtered and comes back in your inbox at the time you pick.
How a filtered sender's new mail arrives
Each filtered sender has two settings: Arrives (whether new mail lands Read or Unread) and Badge (whether the Filtered tab shows a count for it, On or Off).
- Arrives Read, Badge Off: new mail arrives already read and the tab never counts it. It is there whenever you look. The Filter dialog starts here.
- Arrives Read, Badge On: new mail arrives already read, and the tab still shows a count until you open the Filtered tab.
- Arrives Unread, Badge Off: new mail arrives unread, but the tab never counts it.
- Arrives Unread, Badge On: new mail arrives unread and the Filtered tab shows a count until you read it.
The badge counts conversations, not messages, and opening a conversation reads every message in it.
With either badge setting, if you are expecting something from an address you filtered earlier, such as a verification link, the count tells you it has arrived.
Change a sender's settings from one of their emails
An email that is already in the Filtered tab carries a blue Filtered pill in the sender row at the top of the message, next to + Contacts and Unsubscribe. Click it to open the same dialog the Filter button shows, already set to how that sender's mail arrives now.
- Click the blue Filtered pill.
- Change Arrives (Read or Unread) and Badge (Off or On). The preview shows what the pair looks like.
- Click Save, or Cancel to leave it as it was.
It changes the sender's setting, not the email. Only mail that arrives after you save is affected; mail already in Filtered keeps its read state, and no other email is marked read. The dialog names the rule it is changing, which is the sender's address, or their whole domain, or for a Shopify order notification the store. To stop filtering them altogether, remove them in the filtered senders list instead.
If the sender is no longer filtered (you removed the rule), the pill says so instead of opening the dialog.
The filtered senders list
At the bottom of the Filtered tab, a line shows how many senders this mailbox filters. Click Manage beside it to open the list without leaving your mail. The same list is in Settings › Email › Filtered Senders. In it you can:
- change how each sender's new mail arrives, from its Arrives and Badge menus
- add a sender or a whole domain by hand, for one mailbox or for All mailboxes
- Remove a sender to stop filtering them. New mail from them stops going to Filtered; mail already in Filtered stays there until you move it
Filtered mail does not set off a notification on your phone, so that count is where it announces itself.
Shopify order notifications file by store
The email Shopify sends you when someone orders comes from your own store address to your own store address. Filtering by sender would therefore hide everything your store mailbox sends, not just the order notifications.
So on one of those emails, Filter files the notifications from that
store and leaves the rest of your mail alone. The rule that appears in your
filtered-senders list is the store, for example
your-store.myshopify.com, and you remove it there the same way as any other.
Filter is hidden on your own mail
If a message was sent from one of your own connected addresses and it is not a Shopify order notification, the Filter button is not offered. There is no sender rule that would hide just that kind of message without hiding everything else the mailbox sends. Archive it instead.
Filtering also keeps your real mailbox in step, in whichever way that mailbox works. On Gmail the message gets a TALISK_HQ/Filtered label and leaves your Gmail inbox. On Outlook it is moved into a folder called TALISK_HQ Filtered, which is how mail leaves an Outlook inbox. On IMAP the filter is TALISK_HQ-only.
