See your Stripe subscribers and monthly recurring revenue

Updated

Open this in Talisk HQ

If you sell subscriptions through Stripe, Subscriptions appears in the sidebar after Invoicing. It shows once HQ has synced a subscription from your connected Stripe account, and it stays after your subscribers have all cancelled, so you can still read the history. Disconnecting Stripe hides it.

Everything on the page comes from your Stripe subscriptions, not your books. HQ reads them from Stripe every hour, and the MRR card says when it last did. Subscriptions sold through Shopify's own subscription apps never reach Stripe, so they are not included.

The money itself reaches your books when Stripe pays it out: see Payouts to your books.

Monthly recurring revenue

The top card shows your monthly recurring revenue (MRR). You get one figure per currency, with your business's own currency first. HQ never adds currencies together, because the total would mean nothing.

To see how it is worked out, hover over How this is worked out, or tab to it with the keyboard. It takes each active or past-due subscription's price times its quantity, scales that to a month, and takes off any discount that repeats. Trials are left out. Stripe's own MRR can differ in edge cases.

A subscription on usage or tiered pricing has no fixed monthly amount, so it is left out of MRR and the card says how many were.

The counts

  • Active: subscriptions that are active or past due.
  • New this month and Cancelled this month: by the calendar month where your business is.
  • On a trial: counted here and not in MRR.
  • Cancelling at period end: still running, but set to stop when the period they have paid for ends.

Failed payments

Failed payments lists each subscriber whose latest payment failed: their name, Past due or Unpaid, since when, and the amount. It is hidden when there are none. Click Open in Stripe to deal with it in the Stripe Dashboard; nothing is retried or cancelled from HQ.

Find a subscriber

The list below shows Current subscriptions, newest first, and Ended shows the ones that have stopped. Type in the search box to find someone by name, email or plan. Each row shows the plan and its price, what it comes to per month (Not in MRR when it has no fixed amount), where the subscription stands, and when it started. Open in Stripe opens that subscription in the Stripe Dashboard.

A subscription that never really started, because its first payment was never made, is not listed or counted.

If HQ asks you to approve new permissions

Reading subscriptions needs permissions that earlier installs of the TALISK_HQ app did not have, and an install keeps its old permissions until the account owner approves the new ones in Stripe. Until then the page says so, and the Stripe row in Ledger › Setup says the same, so you can see it even when you have no Subscriptions item yet. Approve them in your Stripe Dashboard, and the figures appear after the next hourly sync. You do not need to reconnect, and your payouts keep syncing in the meantime.

Good to know: The Subscriptions page is read only: it shows what Stripe says about your subscribers and posts nothing. HQ cannot retry a payment, cancel a subscription or refund one; open it in the Stripe Dashboard for that. Monthly recurring revenue is Stripe's figure, not a book figure, so it is on no report. Your own Talisk HQ plan is a different thing: see Manage your subscription.
