Read Movements in Equity

Open this in Talisk HQ

Movements in Equity shows how each equity balance got from the start of a period to its end. Your accountant usually asks for it at year-end, and it answers a question the Balance Sheet can't: equity changed, so what changed it?

  1. Go to Ledger › Reports, pick Statements on the group row, then open the Equity tab beneath it.
  2. Set the date range with the period picker.
  3. Read each row across, from Opening to Closing:
    • Net income is the period's profit or loss, the same figure as your P&L on the accrual basis. It sits on the Retained Earnings (current period) row until the year is closed.
    • Year-end close moves a closed year's profit into Retained Earnings. It moves money between two rows, so it adds nothing to total equity.
    • Other movements is everything else posted to that account, such as owner contributions and draws, or dividends. The list under the table names each one.
  4. Select an account's name to see the entries behind it in the General Ledger.

Opening and Closing are the equity on your Balance Sheet the day before the period starts and on its last day, so the two reports agree. If the columns ever fail to add up, an Unexplained difference appears under the table rather than being folded into a row. Check Books health in Ledger, or ask your accountant to look.

Use CSV to download it. The Year-End Pack includes it for the fiscal year as equity_movements.csv.

Good to know: The report is always on an accrual construction, like the Balance Sheet: the Cash / Accrual toggle on the P&L doesn't apply here. It reads what is posted to your equity accounts, so money you put in or took out that was never recorded will not appear. It does not decide how profit should be divided between owners, or how a dividend should be taxed: that is for your accountant.
