Add a second company from your account
Updated
Each HQ account holds one business. If you run a second business, add it from the account you already have and HQ links the two, so it knows they are both yours.
Add the business
- Open Settings › Account and find Add another business.
- Choose Add another business….
- Enter an email address for the new business and a password for it. It has to be a different address from the one you sign in with now. A plus alias of your own address works if your email provider supports one.
- Choose Add business.
HQ creates the new account and sends one email to the new address. Open it and follow its link to confirm the address. The same email lists the steps below.
Run both side by side
Each business is its own login, and each window stays signed in to its own business.
- Mac: in the HQ desktop app choose File › New Window for Another Account (or press Cmd+Shift+N, or right-click HQ in the Dock), then sign in with the new business's address.
- Windows: right-click HQ on the taskbar, or the HQ icon by the clock, and choose New Window for Another Account.
- Phone: open More, tap your account at the top, then Add another account and sign in.
In the latest desktop app, Settings › Account also has Open another account in a new window, which opens the same new window.
See Run a second business in the desktop app and Use more than one HQ account on your phone for switching between them.
Good to know: Each HQ account holds one business, so adding a business creates a second
account with its own email address, password, books, mail and plan. The new
account starts on the Free plan and chooses its own plan; there is no combined
bill and no discount for a second business. HQ records that the two accounts
belong to you, but nothing is shared or combined between them yet. Adding a
business is done from your own login: it is not available in the demo, while
you are working inside a client's account, or while invited into someone
else's books. You can add up to five businesses this way.
